Nigeria marked its 52nd independence anniversary

Nigeria marked its 52nd independence anniversary Monday with a presidential change of guards parade at the forecourt of the President’s office in the nation's capital, Abuja. The parade, performed by 10 officers and 150 soldiers of the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army, involved the presentation of national and regimental colours to the newly-established 176 Special Forces Battalion of the Guards Brigade.

The new battalion was established in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country, which necessitated the creation of a special forces unit that will primarily be charged with the security of the nation's capital and contiguous States. It joins the conventional 7 and 177 battalions of the Brigade.

President Jonathan, who was the special guest of honour at the parade, was decked in a Nigerian Army uniform with the rank of Field Marshal.

Before he presented the national and regimental colours to the new battalion, the President witnessed the presidential change of guards parade which involved foot and arms drill, rhythmic and calculated checking of weapons and uniforms, posting sentries and colour parade.

The ceremony proper started with the arrival of President Jonathan and prayers by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, President of the umbrella Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and the Chief Imam of the Abuja National Mosque, Sheik Usman Muhammad.

After the presentation of colours and change of guards, President Jonathan signed the anniversary register.

Accompanied by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha,  former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon President Jonathan then released the pigeons signaling peace and then cut the anniversary cake.

The ceremony was also witnessed by members of the National Assembly, Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and high profile politicians.

Earlier on Monday, the President made an anniversary broadcast to his compatriots, charging them to keep hope alive in view of the challenges facing the nation, and touting the achievements of his administration.
